While most of us look up to movie stars, pop icons, and even fictional superheroes, we fail to realize that those most deserving of our admiration are the teachers who go about doing the most noble profession. Surely at one point, teachers have had a profound and lasting effect in each of our lives. Here are the qualities that make teachers most endearing to us.

Generous. What makes teachers an inspiration is their generosity. Often, materials for visual aids are bought by teachers from their own pockets. Teachers even buy lunch for their students who forgot to pack their own. For them, nothing is too big or small when it comes to taking care of their students.

Inspirational. According to a popular quote, a teacher affects eternity because he doesn’t know where his influence ends. Students continue to be inspired by their teachers even after having graduated from school. As children, some of our dreams have been shaped by our teachers, who continued to believe in us, despite our shortcomings, pushed us to our limits so we may discover our once-unknown capabilities.

Fun. One amazing thing about teachers is that they are able to keep in touch with the child within them. In turn, they remind us not to take ourselves too seriously and not to be afraid of unleashing our silly side. They play with us during recess; they make jokes to make the lesson interesting; and they never let us feel like we’re alone.

Compassionate. A mark of great teachers is being able to empathize with their student’s problems. They understand that sometimes things can be bad at home, or that we could be quarrelling with our parents or significant others. They go out of their way to make things easier for us, whether it’s taking a couple of minutes to listen to our concerns or by helping us cope with our lessons while carrying our burden, they make sure to make us feel that when facing challenges, we have them to count on.

Dedicated. Compared to other professionals, teachers work longer hours, and even work on weekends. Sure their jobs require them to teach from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m., but what about those other hours they spend working on visual aids, giving students counsel after school, and making lesson plans? Despite the long hours and the modest pay, teachers stay in the profession because of their passion for kids and teaching.

Peace makers. A teacher serves as the classroom’s unofficial diplomat – designated to keep the peace. When students disagree, teachers willingly put themselves within the line of fire. Similarly, teachers are the first form of defense against bullying.

Creative. Teachers have the skill of making things seem new and interesting. They are able to present ideas in a new light. There’s always that “Aha!” moment when we learn something new from them. Great teachers are able to engage us in class discussions. They do so by making us laugh, by coming up with visually stimulating lessons, and by making us compete in classroom games. They have excellent knowledge about the subject matter and they make sure that learning is not a chore for us.

Forgiving. Without meaning to, students can sometimes be unkind to their teachers. They see teachers as cruel and unfair tormentors. They can say hurtful things and take their teachers for granted. Despite this, teachers are always open and ready to forgive should students ask, ready to extend a helping hand to these same students. No matter how stubborn and hurtful we get, teachers are more than willing to forgive us and forget any mishap that ever happened.

Trustworthy. Great teachers are great communicators. They build strong rapport with students. When we feel close to our teachers, we are able to share our innermost thoughts with them. We’re confident that whatever we say to them will be kept in good faith. In turn, they advise us on how to handle our problems.

Patient. Of course it can’t be helped if we put our toes out of line every now and then. Teachers understand that part of learning is making mistakes. Thus, they make sure that while we make these mistakes, we learn from their consequences. They have effective discipline skills, forcing us to think about and learn from our actions instead of laying a steady hand and enforcing corporal punishment.

These are just a few of the many qualities that make teachers one of the greatest people we can ever meet or hope to be. It’s not every day that we are made conscious of just how much sacrifice and heart each teacher gives to his or her work. So take a little bit of time today to thank your teachers and show the world how much you appreciate them.
